2019 was a phenomenal year for the Mizzou College of Education! Here are 52 things (+1 for extra credit) that made us proud—one for every week of the year. This photo of “Tiger Stripes” above Jesse Hall, taken by Cathy Rose, became the most popular post in the history of College of Education social media with 146,123 Twitter impressions and a Facebook reach of 41,294.
US News & World Report ranking rose to #25 in public and #36 overall. Online Graduate Programs were in top 12% of ranked programs in the nation. Best graduate programs include: #3 Student Counseling and Personnel Services, #21 Special Education, and #22 Library and Information Studies.
37.4% increase in opening day enrollment for new undergraduates, as compared to Fall 2018.
90.7% first year retention rate for undergraduate students.
The College welcomed 78 new international students from 34 countries.
261 undergraduates and 433 graduate students earned degrees.
The University of Missouri High School, Mizzou Academy, had a record 789 graduates from 15 countries.
Best single year for fundraising in College history: $7.89 million.
$52.9 million in new grants and contracts (July 2018 – June 2019)
Established the National Center for Rural School Mental Health.
Established the Missouri Language and Literacies Center with funding from the UM System.
School of Information Science & Learning Technologies (SISLT) faculty began a program to establish health librarians in rural and underserved communities.
The Department of Special Education received a $1.25 million grant to fund five new doctoral students and address pressing issues in the field.
Adventure Club reached its highest enrollment with 1,136 participants.
The Network for Educator Effectiveness (NEE), part of the Assessment Resource Center, now serves 285+ Missouri and Nebraska school districts.
Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS) served 5,065 students in 544 Missouri high schools.
The eMINTS National Center began to implement a Supporting Effective Educator Development (SEED) grant.
ParentLink began to implement a Kinship Navigator program for caregivers who care for children who are not biologically their own.
Heart of Missouri Regional Professional Development Center (RPDC) had almost 1,200 participants in one or more trainings.
The Hook Center hosted an Assembly on Continuous Quality Improvement that featured school district leaders from across Missouri.
The Mizzou Middleton Fellows Program, under Charter School Operations, led efforts for Mizzou student mentors to enhance the lives of Kansas City and St. Louis middle and high school students.
Creation of The Scoop resulted in 76% fewer emails to faculty and staff in the college in Fall 2019 (compared to Fall 2018).
The Jolene Marra Schulz Partners Advancing Education Endowment was announced, along with the Jolene Marra Schulz Lobby in Townsend Hall.
Nine new scholarships were established to support student success.
Professional Staff Council coordinated staff community service during the annual Volunteer Day.
The Missouri Partnership for Educational Renewal (MPER) added Confluence Academies in St. Louis as a new member.
Six Facebook Live sessions promoted Mizzou Education to prospective students.
The College Colors Day Photo won 1st place group for the third consecutive year.
Awards and Recognition – Faculty
- Denice Adkins received the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE) 2019 Service Award.
- Sarah Buchanan received the Chancellor’s Excellence Award for Most Outstanding Organization Advisor.
- Kathryn Chval received the Columbia Business Times Women of Excellence – Education Award and the TODOS Iris M. Carl Equity and Leadership Award.
- Zandra de Araujo received the UM President’s Award for Early Career Excellence and the AMTE 2020 Early Career Award.
- Ty Douglas received the UM President’s Award for Community Engagement and was selected as a 2019-20 UM Presidential Engagement Fellow.
- Jennifer Fellabaum-Toston received a 2019 William T. Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence Award.
- Keith Herman received the UM President’s Award for Sustained Career Excellence and was selected as a Curators’ Distinguished Professor.
- Tim Lewis received the 2020 Council for Exceptional Children J.E. Wallace Wallin Lifetime Achievement Award.
- Gabrielle Malfatti received the Association of North America Higher Education International (ANAHEI) – Patrick J. Moreo Award for Global Education Leadership.
- Pilar Mendoza received a Fulbright Scholarship to Colombia as well as the 2019 MU Extension and Engagement International Engagement Award.
- Mike Metz received the 2019 Provost Outstanding Junior Faculty Teaching Award.
- Joi Moore received the Presidential Award at the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) Annual Conference.
- Leigh Neier was selected as a 2019-20 UM Presidential Engagement Fellow.
- Sam Otten received the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE) Nadine Bezuck Excellence in Leadership & Service Award.
- Cisco Sanchez served as an expert consultant for a Supreme Court case.
- Marcelle Siegel was recognized by the Chancellor’s Committee on the Status of Women as the 2019 Alumnae Anniversary Award winner and the 2018-19 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.
- College of Education Golden Apple Teaching Award Recipients included Aimee Klimczak, Se Woong Lee, Sarah Diem, Laurie Kingsley, and Lauren Ray.
- Faculty promotions included Angie Zapata, Wolfgang Wiedermann, and Chris Slaten to associate professor with tenure and Laurie Kingsley to professor of teaching.
Awards and Recognition – Staff
- Porter Graham Staff Excellence Award recipients included Lisa Bax, Kelly Benson, Fran Colley, Tim Eisenbarth, Jason Fenton, Tristan Halper, Debbie Harms, Michelle Kendrick, Shawna Nichols, Sonya Nistendirk, April Ravert, and Caitlin Rosbach.
- Dilauna Burks was elected to the MU Staff Advisory Council.
- Theresa Metz received the 2019 MU Inclusive Excellence Award and the 2019 MU Staff Engagement Award from MU Extension & Engagement.
- Sonya Nistendirk received the 2019 Mizzou Alumni Association Award for Alumni Relations Excellence.
- Christine Terry, Research & Strategy Advisor, eMINTS National Center was elected to serve as an International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Board Member.
- New faculty starting in Fall 2019 include Linda Helmick, Sam von Gillern, and Terrell Morton in Learning, Teaching & Curriculum; Jessica Rodrigues, Jennifer Weyman and Lorraine Becerra in Special Education; Yongnam Kim, Brittany Beasley, Shannon Holmes, Sara Prewett and Greg Sullivan in Educational, School & Counseling Psychology; Hyerim Cho, School of Information Science & Learning Technologies.
- 52 new full time staff were hired in 2019.
